What the Research Shows: CoQ10, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3

We searched the medical research on CoQ10, vitamin K2 and vitamin D3. We read the large reviews that pool many trials, plus the long studies that followed people for years. Here is what held up.

CoQ10

  • Energy. In a review of 13 trials with 1,126 people, CoQ10 lowered fatigue scores.
  • Blood vessels. Across 12 trials, CoQ10 improved how well blood vessels relax and widen.
  • Statins. Across 12 trials with 1,776 people, statins lowered blood CoQ10. Statins block the same pathway your body uses to make it.
  • Skin. In a small 12-week study, adults taking CoQ10 had smoother skin and fewer fine wrinkles.

Vitamin K2 (MK-7)

Vitamin K2 turns on the proteins that put calcium into bone and help keep it out of artery walls.

  • Bone. Healthy women who took MK-7 for 3 years lost less bone than women on placebo.
  • Arteries. The same women had more flexible arteries than the placebo group.
  • Diet. In the Rotterdam Study of 4,807 adults, people who ate the most vitamin K2 had less hardening of the aorta.

Important: Vitamin K2 changes how warfarin and similar blood thinners work. Do not take it with one of these drugs unless your prescriber says it is okay.

Vitamin D3

  • Many people are low. About half of people worldwide have vitamin D levels below 50 nmol/L.
  • Cell aging. In the VITAL trial, daily vitamin D3 slowed the shortening of telomeres over 4 years. Telomeres are the caps that protect the ends of your DNA.
  • Body size matters. In a study of more than 17,000 adults, people with higher body weight needed 2 to 3 times more vitamin D to reach the same blood level.

Why These Three Go Together

Your body makes less CoQ10 with age. Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium, and vitamin K2 helps send that calcium to bone. Many adults over 40 are low in more than one of these. We check levels and build a plan around your results.
