Functional medicine looks for the reason you feel unwell instead of only treating the symptom. The goal is to find what is driving the problem and fix that.
Say you have aching joints. Regular care often hands you a pain pill. Functional medicine asks why the joints hurt in the first place. Is there inflammation? A thyroid problem? A food you react to? An old injury changing how you move? Treat that, and the pain often improves on its own.
How It Is Different From Regular Care
Regular medicine is very good at emergencies. A heart attack, a broken bone, an infection. You want a hospital for those.
It does less well with long-running problems like fatigue, gut trouble, weight gain, and hormone changes. Those get split between specialists. Each one looks at one organ. Nobody looks at the whole person.
Functional medicine treats the body as one connected system. Your gut affects your brain. Your sleep affects your hormones. Your stress affects your blood sugar. We look at how those pieces work together.
Your Story Matters
We start with your history, and we take time with it. When did you last feel well? What changed around then? A move, a divorce, an illness, a new medication, a pregnancy, a job with night shifts?
Two people can have the same diagnosis for completely different reasons. One person’s fatigue comes from low thyroid. Another’s comes from sleep apnea. A third has iron deficiency. The same pill will not help all three.
This is why our first visit runs 90 minutes or more. A 15-minute appointment cannot get at this.
Predisposers, Triggers, and What Keeps It Going
We look at three things for every chronic problem.
- What made you prone to it. Genetics, family history, early-life stress.
- What set it off. An infection, a surgery, a toxic exposure, a stressful year.
- What keeps it going. Poor sleep, ongoing inflammation, blood sugar swings, an unaddressed hormone problem.
The last one matters most. Removing what keeps a problem alive is often what finally lets you get better.
Testing, Not Guessing
We test rather than assume. That usually means a fuller lab panel than you are used to.
A standard thyroid check may only include TSH. We look at the full picture, including Free T3, because people can feel awful with a TSH that looks fine. We also look at markers of inflammation, nutrients, blood sugar over time, and hormones when they matter.
We read those results against optimal ranges, not just the wide "normal" range on the lab sheet. Normal means you are not sick enough to be flagged. Optimal means you feel good.
What Treatment Looks Like
Treatment is built for you, and it is rarely one thing. It may include food changes, sleep work, targeted supplements, hormone therapy, or prescription medication.
We use medication when medication is the right tool. Functional medicine is not anti-drug. It is against handing out a drug before anyone has asked why you need it.
Who It Helps Most
Functional medicine tends to help people who:
- Have been told their labs are normal but still feel unwell
- Are tired all the time with no clear reason
- Have several small problems that nobody has connected
- Are managing a chronic condition and want to slow it down
- Feel rushed through appointments
What It Is Not
It is not a replacement for your primary care doctor, and it is not a cure for everything. Some problems need surgery, a specialist, or a hospital. We will tell you when that is the case.
It also takes time. Root causes took years to build and do not resolve in one visit. Most people start noticing changes within a few months.
What Your First Year Might Look Like
A typical path starts with a long first visit and a broad lab panel. We review results together and build a plan, usually starting with the one or two things likely to make the biggest difference rather than twenty changes at once.
We recheck labs at six to eight weeks and adjust. Over the following months we work through the remaining pieces as earlier changes take hold.
Most people notice energy and sleep first. Weight, mood, and lab markers tend to follow over three to six months.
What We Ask of You
This model asks more of you than a prescription does. It works best when you are willing to change some habits, take part in decisions, and stay in contact between visits.
You do not have to overhaul your life. But if nothing about your sleep, food, or movement can change, there is a limit to what any plan will achieve.
